Theresa is the Shadow Secretary of State for Transport and lives in Arkley in Barnet. She was born in 1968 and grew up in north London. She has a first class law degree from the University of Bristol and a BCL from Jesus College, Oxford. She is a former barrister and lecturer in law at King's College, London.
From 1999 to 2005, she was a well known eurosceptic MEP for the London region. In 2005, Theresa was elected to the House of Commons as MP for Chipping Barnet.
In December 2005, after just 7 months in parliament, David Cameron appointed Theresa to his Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury. As well as working alongside George Osborne on developing Conservative economic policy, Theresa led the Opposition scrutiny of the Finance Bills in 2006 and 2007. At David Cameron’s first reshuffle in July 2007, Theresa gained further promotion and was given her own portfolio – transport.
For many years, Theresa has been campaigning on important local issues for Barnet such as: putting more police on the beat; defending the suburbs; conserving the Green Belt and our local environment; working to reunite Cyprus; demanding a more reliable tube; and improving our local hospitals and schools.
Theresa has appeared regularly in the national media including BBC Today, Any Questions and Question Time. From 2001 to 2002 she was Deputy Leader of the Conservatives in the European Parliament and a member of the governing board of the Conservative Party. She is a Vice President of the party's youth organisation, Conservative Future.
Both as an MP and an MEP, Theresa has fought hard against the Euro, the European Constitution and any extension of EU powers.
